Recipe: Old Fashioned (serves one)

  • 1 tsp. cherry syrup or 1 tsp. superfine sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 orange slice
  • 1/2 lemon slice
  • 1 black cherry
  • 2 1/2 oz. bourbon
  • Orange slice and black cherry for garnish

In the bottom of a rocks or old-fashioned glass, add cherry syrup, bitters, orange and lemon slices, and a cherry. Muddle together. Fill the glass with ice. Add bourbon and stir well. Garnish with another orange slice and cherry.

The Old Fashioned is a classic American cocktail dating back to the late 1800s. Its ingredients are similar to the Manhattan, but with the vermouth replaced by sugar and fruit.

The bourbon.  Maker’s Mark 46 is our go-to bourbon.

The cherries and syrup. We use Amarena Toschi black cherries in syrup, although it’s more traditional to use Maraschino cherries and sugar. When using sugar, superfine is best, since it dissolves very quickly.
